With reference to suitable theory and models of group decision making, Essay
With reference to suitable theory and models of group decision making, critically analyse how to performed in the group decision making process used to achieve a solution - Essay Example Knights and Willmott (2007, p.325), using a model identified by Williams et at (1985) present a contrast between the ââ¬Å"idealâ⬠rational decision making process, and those factors that introduce irrationality: There is also the impact of the amount of information available, and who has it. March and Simon (1958 in Knights and Willmott 2007) identified ââ¬Å"bounded rationalityâ⬠as an issue for decision making. The human mind can only cope with so much information at any one time, otherwise information overload results. What the mind takes notice of, will be determined by the individual, and much of the complexity involved in the decision will be lost. Information asymmetries also affect group decision making processes. Brodbeck et al (2007) note that certain information asymmetries are beneficial for group decision making, while others are not. Information vigilance instructions (withholding decisions until all available information has been discussed) and having sufficient time for the discussion (to allow for sharing of all available information) contribute to effective group decision making (ibid, p.473) while critical norms (which reduce negotiation possibilities) and dual-task structuring (dividing a task in two and requiring all information to be obtained before decisions can be reached) hinder it (ibid, pp.473-474). An individual making a decision only has to consider their own requirements when selecting a solution. Within a group or team, however, there are several viewpoints to consider, and the complexity increases as the size of the group or team does. In a group situation, decision making is affected by what people bring to meetings to discuss the issues. If a similar situation is known to someone, they might bring their knowledge of how that problem was solved (Watson, 2006). Who attends such meetings and who is absent also affects the decision outcome (ibid) as those with relevant knowledge might not be present; if they were

Research proposal - Essay Example 78). Despite the widely acceptance, some scholars have opposed it, raising the arguments that it does not capture the entire sources of social influence especially among youths and the predicators it defines are not usually sufficient either (Bouzigard & Saidel 2010). For detailed understanding, studies should always be theory based. In this analysis, the theory of planned behavior was adopted as the theoretical framework to enhance the understanding (Ajzen 1991, p. 201). This theory asserts that when a person has a strong positive attitude, his/her subject norms will be stronger and the perceived control over the behavior will be greater; the intention to perform a particular behavior will be high, leading to involvement in that particular behavior. This theory is related to the influence students undergo in Saudi Arabia, leading to smoking instances (Kobus 2003, p. 36). Due to peer pressure, innocent students usually backslide and consequently follow the meek behaviors of their colleagues. Non-smoking students finally get themselves smoking. Most students in Saudi Arabia associate smoking with tobacco and not other substances. This is the reason why the government declared Saudi Arabia a free tobacco nation in 2000 (Garner & Alty 2005). In some instances, teachers smoke before their students, leading to poor role modeling (Connolly 2001, p. 31). Students from smoking families who also see their teachers smoke will have the courage to participate in advertisements designed to promote its consumption amongst the youths (Higgins & Conner 2003). The study aims to highlight how smoking affects behavior of students and the negative impacts it brings. Records from world heath organizations indicate that between 1999 and 2008 smoking amongst young people started between the ages of 13ââ¬â15. Another set of data collected between 1999 and 2009 indicates that smoking prevalence ranges between 2.4% and 37%. The findings point

Immigration Reform Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 2
Immigration Reform - Essay Example I support this debate since it will work to bridge the gap between generations as well as helping the government in its policies and planning in terms of budget and human capital usability. Through the reform, boarder security measures will be enhanced. This reform will create a support system to the immigrants who have been forced to immigrate due to hard economic times, lack of opportunities, and lack of proper social guarantees in their home country (Rosenblum and Brick 1). The future care of the immigrants in the US will be handled by the reform, which will ensure they get included in the health care proposals and taxpayer-funded public benefits. To handle the matter on immigration reform and the ongoing debate, I will do a comparative analysis of the debate through thoughtful discussion on the policy realignment and enlightenment within the US. My major point of focus will be on the achievements and the recommendations on the reforms while seeking solutions on the upcoming differences between the federalists and the anti-federalist. Among many reforms focused on immigration, representative governance is one way to ensure that needs of immigrants are met. A successful integration of immigrants and the locals in terms of governance is related to US realignment of its policies on social contracts. Providing leadership opportunities within them could create opportunities for successful integration (Jimenez 18). However, this has not been the case since federal governmentââ¬â¢s steps towards creating such opportunities have been so micro. There are youths in the third generation that are still considered unauthorized hence calling for tough enforcements for legalization (Rosenblum 2). Though they have ensured that immigrants are civically engaged, federal leadership policy needs a major realignment if a successful integration will be achieved. As human beings, immigrants have their rights. With the

Database Theory and Design Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Database Theory and Design - Coursework Example Normalization is a formal process for deciding which attributes should be grouped together in a relation (Elmasri & Navathe, 1994). It involves decomposing relations with anomalies to produce smaller, well-structured relations. Three problems usually arise in databases where relations are not normalized. First we could have insertion anomaly, this is where adding new rows forces the user to create duplicate data in the database. Secondly we have modification anomaly, i.e. where changing data in a row forces us to make changes to other rows because of duplication. Finally we have deletion anomaly which means that when we delete rows we may cause a loss of data that would be needed for other future rows (Connoly & Begg, 2005). First Normal Form (1NF) means that all multi-valued attributes are removed, so that we have a single value at the intersection of each row and column of the relation table. Second Normal Form (2NF) means we apply the rule for 1NF then we remove all partial functional dependencies. Third Normal Form means we apply the rules for 2NF then we remove all transitive dependencies. ASSIGNMENT ââ¬â client-id#, consultant-id#, start-date, work-hours, job-code, rate-per-hour is in 2NF (second normal form). This is because rate-per hour is transitively dependent on job-code. Therefore to make ASSIGNMENT into third normal form (3NF) we remove rate-per-hour from its attributes to end up with ASSIGNMENT ââ¬â client-id#, consultant-id#, start-date, work-hours,

The short story Two Kinds Essay Example for Free
The short story Two Kinds Essay Analysis: The short story, Two Kinds,ï ¿ ½ displays the relationship between a Chinese mother and a disobedient Americanized daughter. Jing-mei, a second-generation Chinese daughter, deals with her own internal conflict as well as an external conflict with her mother. The internal effort to find her true self is a lesson Jing-mei will have to discover, as she gets older. Being born of Chinese heritage, Jing-mei struggles with the burden of failing to meet her mothers expectations. She was never sure what she wanted to become. Throughout the story, Amy Tan represents the theme that parents cannot control their children, but can only guide them. Amy Tans Two Kinds first two paragraphs provides information about the motherââ¬â¢s beliefs. There are at least two things: (1) the voice of a narrator who does not quite share her motherââ¬â¢s opinion, and (2) a comic tone. When someone says, ââ¬Å"My mother believed,â⬠there is sure to be some difference between the speaker and the reported belief. The belief is further distanced by the fivefold repetition of ââ¬Å"You could.â⬠The comedyââ¬âperhaps better characterized as mild humorââ¬âis evident in the naivete or simplicity of ambitions: open a business, work for a company, retire, buy a house, become famous. Many people may feel superior (as the daughter herself does) to this mother, who apparently thinks that in America money and fame and even genius are readily available to all who apply themselvesââ¬âbut many people may also wish that their mother was as enthusiastic. The second paragraph adds a sort of comic topper. After all, when the mother says, in the first paragraph, ââ¬Å"you could be anything you wanted to be in America,â⬠the ambitions that she specifies are not impossible, but when in the second paragraph she says, ââ¬Å"you can be prodigy too,â⬠and ââ¬Å"you can be best anything,â⬠we realize that we are listening to an obsessed parent, a woman ferociously possessive of her daughter. Obsessions, of course, can be the stuff of tragedyââ¬âMacbeth, Brutus, and so forthââ¬âbut obsessions are also the stuff of comedy. The third paragraph, with its references to the terrible losses in China, darkens the tone, but the fourth restores the comedy, with its vision of ââ¬Å"a Chinese Shirley Temple.â⬠à The fifth paragraph is perhaps the most obviously funny so far. When Shirley Temple cries, the narratorââ¬â¢s mother says to her daughter: ââ¬Å"You already know how. Donââ¬â¢t need talent for crying!â⬠Peopleââ¬âaccustomed to thinking that everything in a textbook is deadly seriousââ¬âeasily miss the humor. They will definitely grasp the absurdity of the thought that ââ¬Å"Nairobiâ⬠might be one way of pronouncing Helsinki, but they may miss the delightful comedy of Auntie Lindo pretending that Waverlyââ¬â¢s abundant chess trophies are a nuisance (ââ¬Å"all day I have no time to do nothing but dust off her winningsâ⬠), and even a deaf piano teacher may not strike them as comic. The story is comic (for example, in the motherââ¬â¢s single-mindedness, and in the daughterââ¬â¢s absurd hope that the recital may be going all right, even though she is hitting all the wrong notes) but is also serious (the conflict between the mother and the daughter, the motherââ¬â¢s passionate love, the daughterââ¬â¢s rebelliousness, and the daughterââ¬â¢s later recognition that her mother loved her deeply). It is serious, too, in the way it shows us (especially in the passage about the ââ¬Å"old Chinese silk dressesâ⬠) the narratorââ¬â¢s deepening perception of her Chinese heritage. Humor and seriousness can be found in all types of family situations between parents and children.
